Oh! No! a Bug on Linux. I am still with Ubuntu6.06, Yes I know a bit behind the times, but it has been good enough for my skill (I laugh) level.
The Bug is designated #276640
Having trouble attaching to a Brother printer, I cleverly decided to use another small computer and have XP loaded, to run the printer, and then to set up a KVM switch between my Linux computer and the XP one.
I do not know if it was coincidence or not, but I opened the Linux computer, ready to play with my new gadgets to find that all the pages are much too big for the screen resolution.
Ok! I hear you say, just change the screen resolution and make it the default size. Can't, the resolution drop down does not exist now and I am stuck with 640-680
The curser works but jerks around like an ant with St Vitus Dance, and each time I shut down and open up something more is not going as it should.
I tried the advice given on the Ubuntu page but it is not working either.
Is this fixable? Is it a contamination from XP?
Or, in the words of the intrepid explorer.....HELP!
Linux, Good but not for me
Adminsitrator
Being a 7 year user of Linux I am afraid I have come to the conclusion that it is not for me.
I had become a nominal learned user of Linux but as far as probems are concerned I am at a severe disadvantage. I keep pestering a bloke that tells me that he does not want to help me with my problems, but kindly comes in and for $50 fixes or does'nt fix my problem.
You see, my problem is that I am an old bloke, with no early in life computer knowledge, and because of age, I have a very low learning curve.
It is my considered opinion that if you are well versed in the world of Computer jargon, problem solving and a general computer program use, you will really love Linux.
Locally, there is no back up for the learner. There is are no education for the learner, and the Club Linux is travelling on the Guru Speak advantage.
I can't knock that situation, as I would be the same. If I was an expert at anything, would I like to talk to the Dummies? Dunno.
My Opinion!
Sorry to see you go...
Sorry to lose you Deadfrog. At least you gave it a whirl which is more than many can say. Using Gnu/Linux is definitely easier with a community of like minded users and Microsoft seems to have the monopoly there. Here in the Coffs region we are a fairly rare bunch.
If you get sick of the Windows security meltdowns, viruses and forced upgrades in the next year or two please come back and say hello :)
Cheers
Ruben
