Mandriva

Recent Distro Updates

Linux.com has reviewed the new releases from Mandriva and Ubuntu, both generally favourably. Mandriva's package management system(s) still appear to be letting it down, and Ubuntu "Edgy" disappoints for it's lack of "edginess". If you've used either, leave your impressions in the comments below.

Free Software Day

I thought the Free Software day was very good, even for this old slow learner.

I feel a little embarrassed by my "demo" as by the time I got around to it I was the student trying to teach the professors.

The day showed me, very much, how much I do not know about the use of Linux programs. I am learning though, slowly, but learning.

All in all a great day and Matthew and his lovely wife should be really pleased with themeselves.

About GIMP

I am trying the question and answers for the first time...I had to find out that one question had been answered and I just could not find the answer.  Our man Matthew put me on the right track...Thank you Matthew.

GIMP Question:   When saving a photo from GIMP after resizing or other work, what 'file' or format should it be saved in to make it suitable to send to most other operating systems.

Mandriva Linux 2006 for home users

Here's a nice introduction to Mandriva, targeted at Jane and Joe Public.

SeerOfSouls: Mandriva Backports

Backporting is the practice of applying improvements from recent versions of software to older versions.  Where individual software packages are concerned this is often done to add critical bug fixes to an older version of a program in a stable system, without risking the introduction of other bugs by upgrading the entire package.

It is also common for people to backport a new version of a program in it's entirety to run on an older system.  An article on Newsforge has alerted me to a site containing backports of shiny new software for the latest stable version of Mandriva.

19th March meeting

The last meeting, 19th March was a great learning experience.  Glen Cunningham is a valued educator to our group and we hope to hear a lot more from this man.

Our younger member, Hugh, has kindly stepped into the ring to make a presentation on GNOME at our next meeting.

Please encourage Linux users to register on this web site, we need the input and numbers.

CLub Linux meeting dates

deadfrog is the the user name of a person yet to be revealed but you know me.

Meeting times will be at one month intervals until we decide otherwise.  At present we are using David Chapmans shop at Orlando Street and he and his wife are expecting a baby so things are getting exciting in that department...March is the expected month and around about the 7th.
