The Gimp is great graphics editor that I use a lot. I have not become as adept at using it as I once was with Photoshop. So I am starting this thread to keep notes on stuff that I keep forgetting. If you'd like to share please feel free to add any cool gimp plugins or procedures/shortcuts to do cool things.
So to kick off here is a link to a great plugin:
Oh! No! a Bug on Linux. I am still with Ubuntu6.06, Yes I know a bit behind the times, but it has been good enough for my skill (I laugh) level.
The Bug is designated #276640
Having trouble attaching to a Brother printer, I cleverly decided to use another small computer and have XP loaded, to run the printer, and then to set up a KVM switch between my Linux computer and the XP one.
I do not know if it was coincidence or not, but I opened the Linux computer, ready to play with my new gadgets to find that all the pages are much too big for the screen resolution.
My studious partner wants to listen to a Latin podcast on her audio player. She has a bit of catch up to do, there are hundred probably thousands of mp3 files to download. Now I know there are all kinds of graphical download plugins and managers I could use but I prefer something a bit quicker and more simple.
Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself as I am staying in Coffs for a few weeks over Christmas and will be moving here later in the year when my daughter has finished vocal cord surgery at Sydney Children's Hospital.
I was actually just mucking around with a USB DVB-T twin tuner I bought ages ago, which I had just hooked onto my MSI Wind netbook to try and was happy when I fired up Kaffeine, a KDE video viewer that has good support for PC TV, and wanted a channel list to get it started.
I just had to respond to a windows user who is temporarily using Ubuntu (Karmic) until they can get Windows back. They were concerned about the lack of Antivirus software. Apart from my hopeless grammar what do you think? Am I right? How would you have responded? Here is my response:
I just spent more than ten minutes trying to figure out how to change the default audio player on my Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I think the fault is my brain not Ubuntu. Now if I write this down I may actually remember such a simple procedure....
Charlie O'Sullivan just posted this comment on another thread, which I thought was worth promoting to a thread of it's own:
Hi, I'm helping a primary school in Lismore where all Year 5 and 6 kids have a HP 2140 Minibook each. They are using Jaunty. We have tried the following video editors:
Kino, Kdenlive, Lives, Avidemux, Open Movie Editor.
All of them crash at some point when importing, adding effects or whatever. There is no pattern to it. Kino for example, which is supported by and comes with Edubuntu, crashes any time you move / advance the movie or if you right click anywhere on the screen. We are not sure if it is a video driver problem or what. I loaded all the programs on a HP 8430 (with 4GB ram - the minis have 2GB) and have similar problems. Is there anyone in your group who can help with this? I really want to promote Ubuntu to schools but it is difficult when a basic requirement isn't up to scratch and the kids cant use the webcam.
As the problem happens across different applications it looks to be a hardware issue.
Hi everyone. After reading a bunch of doc over the last couple of weeks in my holiday to give myself a good understanding of how this OS works, as of this morning, I seem to have joined the ranks of GNU/Linux users. It wasn't quite what I expected; it was definitely more awesome.
A while ago we got this query via the contact form on the site, and as it's a question so often asked, I think it's worth putting the answer somewhere Google can see it.
I have loaded Ubuntu 8.04 and all is well except when I download other programs eg Banshee I have no idea how to install it or any other app. This is generally a very easy task in windows.
Those of you who have used GNU/Linux for a while are now doubtless spraying the screen with bikkie crumbs as you shout "It's EASIER than in Windows!!!", but there are good reasons why a new Ubuntu user wouldn't know that.
