Charlie O'Sullivan just posted this comment on another thread, which I thought was worth promoting to a thread of it's own:
Hi, I'm helping a primary school in Lismore where all Year 5 and 6 kids have a HP 2140 Minibook each. They are using Jaunty. We have tried the following video editors:
Kino, Kdenlive, Lives, Avidemux, Open Movie Editor.
All of them crash at some point when importing, adding effects or whatever. There is no pattern to it. Kino for example, which is supported by and comes with Edubuntu, crashes any time you move / advance the movie or if you right click anywhere on the screen. We are not sure if it is a video driver problem or what. I loaded all the programs on a HP 8430 (with 4GB ram - the minis have 2GB) and have similar problems. Is there anyone in your group who can help with this? I really want to promote Ubuntu to schools but it is difficult when a basic requirement isn't up to scratch and the kids cant use the webcam.
As the problem happens across different applications it looks to be a hardware issue.
Help! Help! I have purchased a HPC5280 printer and cannot get the following. A Scan program for scan to computer, a Disc Labeler Program. I asked at the retail outlet and was assured that it would work with Linux, and it does as a printer but that is all.
I just moved from Vista to Ubuntu (Hardy) and, among other things, have been trying to install a shared Epson printer attached to a WinXP computer.
I found the System > Admin > Printing thing, and although it finds the shared printer, when trying to find the driver, it doesn't list the exact model I have (Epson Stylus CX3900).
I also found this website: http://www.avasys.jp/lx-bin2/linux_e/spc/DL1.do, but don't know how to install the downloaded file...
BTW, I don't know how to use the Terminal, so would much prefer instructions for the GUI.
Jesse, whom some of us met on Software Freedom Day, made the trip up from Kempsey for the last meeting and has a nasty problem. The problem was with a proprietary operating system, but as the solutions to problems with proprietary software almost universally involve free software, I think it's appropriate to ask for help here.
The symptoms sound very much like a screwed up partition table. The suspicion is that the cause was some sort of trojan that was delievered as an alleged "patch" to some proprietary software for MS Windows. After installing this software, Windows spontaneously rebooted (nothing unusual in that), but on boot-up the computer could find no bootable partitions. On further examination, there was no evidence of any partitions at all. Here's my list of possible solutions; please add any others that come to mind below.
Does Club Linux Coffs Harbour have an IRC channel they hang out on, or a mailing list?
Or is there any way to contact a Club Linux Coffs Harbour member?
I am in Armidale, but my hometown is Grafton, and I want to participate in LUG activities where possible.
Thank you,
PS
What about email address lists?

Just wondering if anyone can help this relative newbie to Linux. I have installed suse 10.2 on two separate machines, one Intel based which works fine, the other with an Nvidia chipset. Am having all sorts of dramas finding and loading the correct drivers for graphics and sound. Can anyone help?
There is a possibility that I will be involved in setting up a web forum. I'm doing some research so that I can at least assess proposals and make some.
So far, it looks to me as though Simple Machines Forum is the best software to use. I am perplexed over the issue of hosting.
I would appreciate any thoughts anyone can offer.
While putting together a computer for a friend i tested his old monitor on what is to be his new system. his monitor was no good, so i thew it out and put something else on the system. at this point i realize, by some course, the system changed the driver to cope with the old school monitor and resolution and refresh rate options have been reduced.
i considered doing a reinstall and ran the Ubuntu live cd. running on the live CD the options are fully available and the screen works well, but as it is, this screen is hurting my eyes.
i am having trouble thinking outside of yast2 and the 'configure monitor' button. What is the Ubuntu way of reconfiguring the monitor?
