Stuff needed for the day

If it's needed on the day, post it here

If it's something we definitely need, or might need, or would be good to have, post about it here.

If you can supply it, let us know!

I need a headset for Skype

Has anyone found a headset (microphone and earphones) which works with a Linux operating system?

Hardware services

Hi.  My cpu needs some attention.  I'd like to get it looked at on site if possible.  I have engaged Don Hunt previously but he seems to have disappeared.

Can anyone suggest a technician who would help at a reasonable cost?

Thanks, Terry

Ubuntu Start Up

It is happening more and more. When I switch on the computer it makes the right sounds, and all the right "OKs" but ten the screen comes up blank.

There is not even the Unbuntu colour background, just a white light background.

I then go through the process of ctrl+alt+backspace and get Destop Open. Click on that and get ???Password...As I did not load Ubuntu I do not know the password and cannot find out, so I then go backspace again and get Options, I press restart and wait until the computer shuts down and loads again.

Quote Posters

I made up some simple posters of inspirational quotes to hang around the room on Software Freedom Day. Feel free to suggest your own; here's what I've come up with so far:

Flyers

Here's a preliminary flyer for Software Freedom Day, in various formats. Print it out, spread it around. If you like, have a go at improving it (the SVG format can be edited in Inkscape). We hope to produce a version with the schedule of presentations for the day, but that's dependant on us having some presentations, so go here to volunteer to help with that.

demo machines

I'll be bringing a couple of demo PC laptops and a Mac laptop along, any suggestions what distro's to put on them?

I was thinking of Ubuntu on the Mac, Sabayon on one of the PC's and something else  on the other lappy? Edbuntu? Slax? FreeBSD? I'm not sure if they all fit strictly under the FSF banner.

Maybe we could:

Volunteers

We will need volunteers for:

  • Setting up
  • Herding visitors
  • Answering questions through the day
  • Packing up

The more the merrier; better to have people standing around with nothing to do than a few very harried people who are exhausted before we've even started.

Wires

Robert Thorsby has volunteered to bring adequate power and networking cables and his jolly big ethernet switch.

Can you confirm you'll be able to make it, Robert?

Demonstration computers

I will have two desktop computers, and a laptop to bring on the day.

The Ex-Services Computer Club will be able to contribute their two laptops.

I think we should aim for up to a dozen demonstration systems. Anybody else?
